Lodging indicators positive for first half of 2019
Lodging data recently released by Visit NC shows that commercial lodging in North Carolina has once again broken a half-year record in terms of total room demand.

North Carolina year-to-date demand growth outpaces the South Atlantic region (+0.6 percent) and U.S. demand growth (-0.5 percent). Since 2000, year-to-date demand through June in N.C., meaning the number of commercial room nights sold of more than 18 million, has grown 38 percent in 19 years.

Sculpture Walk at Chetola with Events all Weekend
Over 50 large, mid-scale and small sculptures will be exhibited August 9th - 11th on Chetola Lake.  The Public is invited to stroll around the lakeside at Chetola Resort to meet renowned sculptors and view their award-winning works of art. Activities all weekend long create a family friendly destination. Special evening events feature art Icons, Bob Timberlake and Joe Miller on Friday night 6:30-9:30 pm.

Middle Fork Greenway Check Drop Off Party
Wednesday, August 14, from 5 - 7 pm
Free admission to Mystery Hill, All Welcome

Bring your kids, invite your staff! All Mystery Hill attractions will be open with free access!  Here is the link to our Check Drop Off Party Facebook Page.  

We will meet up on Tomahawk Hill where you can get your photo taken at the photo booth, and learn how to throw a Tomahawk!!!  Group photo and Greenway progress updates at 5:45 pm. 

FOOD: Mystery Hill will provide tasty treats from each of their represented iconic High Country brands: Hole Lotta Doughnuts, Hatchet Coffee, Check Farmstead Creamery, and Appalachia Cookie Company.  Booneshine Brewing and Lost Province Brewing Co. will provide beverages.  Live Music from The Neighbors 

PARKING: You can park at Tweetsie Railroad and walk the Middle Fork Greenway to Mystery Hill. We highly recommend doing this, especially if you've not been on the trail yet! As soon as you turn in to Tweetsie RR, turn left into the first parking area. The greenway is in between the parking lot and Hwy 321. It's less than a 5-minute walk.

Rosen Sculpture Winners Announced
The winners of the Martin & Doris Rosen 33rd Rosen Sculpture Competition are as follows:
· First Place $3,000: Bob Doster A Memorial, 2014-2018, Stainless steel, Lancaster, SC
· Second Place $2,000: Glenn Zweygardt, Adam Meets Eve, 2018, Fabricated and cast bronze, steel, cast glass, granite, Alfred Station, NY

Mile of Flowers Business Awards


The Blowing Rock Garden Club sponsored the first Mile of Flowers Business Awards for having store front displays with the Mile of Flowers event theme. Awards were given to three stores that encompassed the Mile of Flowers theme with meaningful layers, colors and rustic elements. Judging was done by Blowing Rock Garden Club’s Chairperson, Anne Tarbutton, and the treasure, Barbara Ballesty. All recipient’s received flower wall hangings in addition to first place receiving a $100 gift card to Chetola Resort, second place a free landscaping consultation and third place a $30 gift card to The Mustard Seed.

1st Place was awarded to Mountain Laurel Floristry. The displayed Mile of Flowers enthusiasm with a window display featuring hand-crafted paper flowers promoting the Mile of Flowers event. As well as their courtyard full of flower pots with intricate layering of greenery. The window boxes on their store front had rustic elements to them bringing home Blowing Rock’s mountain heritage.

2nd Place was awarded to Monkee’s of Blowing Rock. Anne Tarbutton and Barbara Ballesty of the Blowing Rock Garden club appreciated Monkee’s flower pots welcoming shop-goers into their store. The bright blue flower pots varied in height and were full of textures greenery. Along the side of the store the garden is more natural, maintained by SouthMarke owners, Karyn and Dieter Herterich. And you can’t forget to take a look at the monkey topiary hanging from a tree.

3rd Place was awarded to J McLaughlin for their beautiful bourbon barrel planter. The planter displays different heights of greenery paired with birch tree twigs for texture. The bourbon barrel is large in size and fits perfectly in the entry way into the store. The Mile of Flower judges found the single display to be stunning in size and height while encompassing the perfect mountain home feel.



Honorable mentions go to three downtown business for their mix of colors and layering in their window displays. In no particular order the Mile of Flower judges appreciated Vincent Properties beautiful window flower boxes, Neacos modern touch of color and heights in their planter box, and Six Pence Pub for their window box with birch tree elements.
