The Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce has supported the Middle Fork Greenway project since its inception. The Chamber believes that the completion of the Greenway will be a huge economic engine for both the village of Blowing Rock and the town of Boone. Consequently the Blowing Rock Chamber Board of Directors recently approved a $3,000 donation from the proceeds of the Snyder field parking at the Symphony by the Lake event to be combined with the businesses round-up contributions and leveraged with other funds to double the impact with a matching grant.

Cybersecurity Tip #2 – Use Multi Factor Authentication (MFA)

Our last cybersecurity tip focused on using an encrypted password application to safely store all your passwords. This next tip takes your cybersecurity hygiene to another level.
Multi Factor Authentication (MFA) is the action of adding an additional layer of authentication to gain access to your accounts. Many of us already are familiar with this technology but were not certain what it was referred to as. An example of where you may already be utilizing MFA is when logging into a financial account. In the past, you would only need your username and password. Nowadays, you need to use an additional layer of security to access that same account (hence the term “Multi factor”). This layer could be a text message or phone call to confirm your identity. Next time you log into any website, see if they offer MFA and if so, enable it. It adds peace of mind and makes unauthorized access more difficult.

If you have a “Tip” that you would like to share, please send to Cathy@BlowingRock.com

TDA Survey Results
The TDA’s most recent survey had just over 75 responding Blowing Rock businessesBecause the pandemic created abrupt changes in travel patterns and excessive demand in 2020 and 2021, many view 2019 as the most recent "normal" year in tourism. For this reason, they used 2019 as a benchmark in some of survey questions.

Here are a few highlights:

·    Comparing 2022 sales/bookings to 2019 sales/bookings, 53% respondents reported that they were higher this year, 18.6% reported that they were about the same, and 2.6% reported that they were lower this year.
·    57% of respondents reported that they currently have adequate staffing, with over half of those being retailers. 34% reported that they are slightly understaffed, while 9% are severely understaffed.
·    While about 30% of respondents have seen more families and younger groups compared to 2019, almost a third haven't noted any changes to traveler types or group sizes.
·    Charlotte and the Triangle area are the top two hometown areas for customers of respondents, and various Florida locations make the third most reported area. Other notable areas include the Triad, Hickory/Lenoir, our local area, and nearby states like SC and GA.

Several respondents noted a slow start to 2022 and rising costs of doing business (inflation, labor costs, supply issues). Some others pointed out continuing issues with parking, though a couple expressed concerns over paid parking solutions.
