Gallery C seeking part-time Retail Sales Associate




Seeking mature adult with outstanding personality to help in all aspects of business for a very small boutique Gallery located in Market Shoppes on Main St, Blowing Rock.  Responsibilities include: learning about the artists and their mediums and sharing that knowledge with customers. Making sales using IPad.  Physical requirements include moving paintings and print racks, being on your feet a lot, hanging art, touching up walls. High energy and great oral communication skills a must!
Part time: 6-12 hours per week, beginning June 1st.

WNC Legislative Trip – Trip Report




Last week we sent a powerful group of business leaders to Raleigh for the WNC Legislature along with 8 other area chambers to advocate for issues affecting our area.

Issues discussed included Voting Maps, Rural Broadband Coverage, Industrial Hemp to Medical Marijuana, challenges with hiring skilled employees, and building relationships with area delegates.

Tuesday, April 9

2-3PM   Political Strategist’s Overview – Moderated by Joe Stewart, VP of Government Affairs for IIANC (Independent Insurance Agents of NC).  Overview of voting trends, issues, Democratic and Republican strategies for 2020 elections.
Notes:  
-          New voting maps in 2021 for 2022 elections in NC.
-          In 2016 there were more urban legislators than rural

3-4PM   Broadband in Rural NC – Panel discussion of Rural Broadband issues, challenges, and solutions

Panelists:
-          Angie Bailey:  Director, NC Broadband Infrastructure Office:  Informed and updated Chambers on rural broadband in NC.  Provided updates on legislation and impacts on our area.  Importance of rural broadband for education and economic development.  Provided BB statistics for NC.

-          Kathryn de Wit:  Pew Charitable Trusts Rural Broadband Research:  Research update on rural broadband in US, and Pew Charitable Trusts Initiatives to help push access to rural areas.  NC Status

-          Nelle Hotchkiss:  COO NC Electric Co-Ops:  How Electric Co-ops are helping and update on any legislative issues that may be obstacles or incentives.  Updated legislative initiatives to include NC Electric Co-ops in Broadband solutions.  Electric Cooperatives have installed fiber for “smart meters” and grid.

-          Hunter Goosmann:  ERC CEO:  Provided updates on successes in rural areas in the mountains, and technical challenges.  Instrumental in Watauga County receiving $100K grant from the ARC.

-         -  Co-ops need access to USDA Federal Funds
-          - Co-ops can’t partner below market rates
-          - Need access to fiber for secondary and primary backhaul and middle mile for ISPs

4-5PM   Industrial Hemp to Medical Marijuana - informational session and overview of trends

5:30 to 7:30  Legislative Reception with WNC Delegation
-          Representative Ray Russell and Senator Deanna Ballard attended along with legislators from other districts in WNC.

7:30  Dinner at 42nd St. Oyster House with Blowing Rock delegation, Rep. Ray Russell, Kathryn de Wit from Pew Charitable Trusts…..Further discussion on Rural BB issues and initiatives.

Wednesday, April 10

8:45 AM   Meeting with Speaker of the House Tim Moore at the Legislative Building.  Speaker Moore’s main message was about “Spreading Prosperity” in all of NC, not just the urban areas.  The economy of NC is good.  Finding talent and skilled workers is the main challenge of NC’s industries and businesses.  Community Colleges are stepping up to help fill the gaps.

Senator Phil Berger, Senate pro tempore since 2011, met our with our group and discussed in some detail the need to provide rural broadband and appeared to understand the electric co-ops.

Movies at the Museum: The Flavor of Place
April 4th at 6 pm
Join Blowing Rock Art & History Museum in welcoming award-winning food writer, Sheri Castle who will be inviting us to consider what it means to be a locavore and why this choice matters. To provide context for this conversation, we will be watching and discussing themes from the Lexicon of Food series presented by PBS and created by the Lexicon of Sustainability project. The selected short films encourage us to think about how food can have a sense of place, and why we might care about where exactly the food that we eat comes from. 



Fly Tie & Fish Fry Picnic

Spring Exhibition Celebration
April 5th, 6 - 10 pm
The Turchin Center for the Visual Arts at Appalachian State University invites the community to a Spring Exhibition Celebration. The public is invited to engage, discover and connect through the arts at the Turchin Center, where the festivities will include costumed dancers and live music in the Main Gallery, refreshments and a cash bar. During this event the Turchin Center will celebrate four exhibitions and many of the artists will be on-hand to meet visitors and provide insight into their intriguing work. Rise Against Hunger
April 7th, 3 - 5 pm
You are invited to join Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church's Meal Packaging Event at Blowing Rock School. Rise Against Hunger is an international hunger relief organization that distributes food and life-changing aid to the world’s most vulnerable, mobilizing the necessary resources to end hunger by 2030. You can be part of the efforts to end hunger by signing up to volunteer for a few hours of packing food.



Outdoor Legends
April 11th, 6 - 9 pm
Outdoor Legends is hosted by the Outdoor Recreation Management program at Lees-McRae College. The event, held at The Apple Barn in Valle Crucis, is split into two portions. From 6 - 7 pm, attendees will have the opportunity to network with both current and past Outdoor Legends. This networking portion will include dinner and drinks. From 7 - 9 pm, a panel discussion with this year’s Outdoor Legends will offer these industry leaders a platform to showcase their stories and experiences.

40th Annual Blowing Rock Trout Derby
April 6th, Sunrise - 4 pm
Kids are invited to fish at Broyhill Park, where fishing licenses are not required (fishing licenses are still needed in all other Watauga County locations, and all posted regulations apply). Derby headquarters, where participants' fish are measured and registered, is at the Blowing Rock Clubhouse, right next to the pool. No entry fees are required and no pre-registration necessary. Winners and prizes will be announced at 4:30 pm.
